As early as 1936, Wright's Usonian housing system (Usonian Automatic Construction) adopted the concept of modular prefabricated construction. At that time, the US economy was in the midst of the Great Depression, and this type of housing was designed to control construction costs. It had no attic, basement, or almost no decoration. Later, in the early 1950s, Wright first used the term Usonian Automatic to describe Usonian style houses built with cheap concrete modular construction.

With the development of technology, modular housing has gradually transformed from a concept to a more mature design method. Its advantages in architectural design, construction, and use have led to its wider application and development. For example, the development of building intelligence has also promoted the continuous progress of modular housing, which is conducive to the implementation of multifunctional buildings. In terms of green design, it has seven characteristics: low cost, compatibility, reusability, easy upgrade, easy maintenance, recyclability, and easy disposal.
